Permanent Account Number abbreviated as PAN, is a legal document used for identifying the taxpayer citizens of the country. PAN is a unique identification number assigned to the registered taxpayers of India. It is a computer based system, identifying every Indian tax paying entity. In this method all the tax and income related information of the card holders is recorded along with their PAN number, the PAN number is the primary key. Thus, there is no chance of any sort of issue of same PAN numbers of two tax paying entities.

The PAN card issued once, is valid for the entire life of the PAN card holders. The reason behind this flexibility is there is no clause of updating the address of the PAN card holder in case of any change in address thus, PAN card is unaffected by the address.

PAN card is an essential document for the Income Tax Department to identify the individuals. As such, each earning citizen of India is required to have a PAN card for correspondence, TDS / TCS credits, specified transactions, returns of wealth/ FBT / gift / income, tax payments, etc.

It has been made mandatory for all the tax paying individuals to possess a PAN card and there a number of options are available on the official website such as Pan Card download online and even you can check the pan card status as well.

In case you have never made an application for a PAN card before, following are the procedures through which you can apply for and avail the same. There are two PAN application forms, viz. Form 49A and Form 49AA. Form 49A must be filled in by Indian citizens who are located within or outside the country, while Form 49AA must be used by NRIs.

Types of PAN Card download Forms :

Procedure to Fill up Form 49A / Form 49AA :

  • Select the category of the individual (49A / 49AA) applying for a PAN card and click ‘next’.
  • Fill the form with all the required details and cross- verify that the information provided is correct and accurate before proceeding to pay.
  • Make the payment online and you will receive a duly filled Form 49A / Form 49AA along with the payment receipt in your email.
  • Get a print out of the form after getting your Pan Card download form and affix two passport-sized photographs to it.
  • Sign the form and attach the supporting documents as required and send it to NDSL at Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NDSL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th Floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No.341, Survey No.997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune – 411016.

How to fill PAN card Application Form ?

  1. Make it point to fill the application form in Block letters.
  2. Use black ink and ensure that no corrections or overwriting is done on the form.
  3. Use full names in the first as well as last name section instead of initials.
  4. Affix two photographs and ensure that they are not clipped or stapled to the form.
  5. Ensure that the proof of address and proof of identity provided matches exactly with the name entered in the form.
  6. Ensure to put the impression of the thumb on your left hand or your signature across the photograph affixed to the application in a manner such that part of the impression / signature appears on the application as well as the photograph. Also ensure that the impression / signature does not hinder the visibility of your face in the photograph as it could result in rejection of your application.
  7. In case thumb impression is used, it must be attested by a Gazetted Officer or a Notary Public or a Magistrate.

PAN Card Application Offline

Apart from the option for Pan Card download from online platforms, the Income Tax Department has authorized PAN centers throughout the country. These centers assist in offline application of PAN. All you have to do is to download your pan card form 49A or 49AA depending upon your citizenship eligibility and then just get that PAN application form printed out.

These PAN centers are located in almost all the major cities of the country supervising the offline applications of PAN. You can step in to these centers for any kind of inquiry related to PAN applications. This offline method of application has been put as an alternative option for those category of citizens who have very little knowledge on how to use internet or have no access to internet. Generally, rural and remote areas are the ones that have low internet connectivity and as such physical procedures for PAN application work best in these places. For people who are not quite well versed with the use of internet, offline mode of PAN application is the only option.
