What is PAN Card?

PAN stand for Permanent Account Number. It is a ten-digit alphanumeric number, issued in the form of a laminated tamper proof card, by the Income Tax Department of India. The Permanent Account Number is unique to for every individual across India. Permanent Account Number once allotted to an individual or entity is unaffected by a change of name, address within or across states in India or other factors. We need PAN card to pay tax. Every individual who pay tax either his own tax or on behalf of other need PAN card. It is also helpful in financial transaction.

General Information for PAN Card Application

  1. Application for a PAN card should be made on the UTIITSL given form or the form given by the Service Center of IT PAN, or the website: http://www.utiitsl.com.
  2. Also Rs.107/- worth processing coupon, from any IT PAN Service Center must be affixed to the form.
  3. If one already has a PAN number allotted, re-application cannot be made, since having two PAN numbers is illegal. However, in this regard applications for a new PAN card with better features can be made, making the payment for Rs.107/-, at the specified centers.
  4. According to the form 49A, column 15, and certain documents are required to be submitted with the PAN application form.

Meaning of PAN card

A typical Permanent Account Number is would look like AFZPK7190K. The logic behind the array of numbers and alphabets is as follows:

First three characters i.e. “AFZ” in the above PAN are alphabetic series running from AAA to ZZZ.

Fourth character i.e. “P” in the above PAN represents the status of the PAN holder.

“P” stands for Individual.

“F” stands for Firm.

“C” stands for Company.

“H” stands for HUF.

“A” stands for AOP.

“T” stands for TRUST etc.

Fifth character i.e. “K” in the above PAN represents first character of the PAN holder’s last name/surname.

Next four characters i.e. “7190” in the above PAN are sequential number running from 0001 to 9999.

Last character i.e. “K” in the above PAN is an alphabetic check digit.
